Back in the 12th Century, when King Henry I bestowed Abbots Wood upon Battle Abbey, the management was under the responsibility of its abbot, hence the name. Filled with Hazel and Hornbeam trees and home to butterflies, dragonflies, dormice and waterfowl, the wood boasts two guided walks: Oaks Walk, a shorter walk, and Abbots Amber, a longer walk leading to the lake.

The best thing about Abbots Wood though has to be the barbecues. You can barbecue for free using the smaller pits dotted around, or book the larger double pits in advance (see website for details); perfect for a gathering of family and friends, especially with little ones in tow as there’s plenty of open space to run around in, plus an adventure style playground and large grassy area for ball games.

And don’t think that barbecues need to be saved for summer months. On crisp, blue days, we love rugging up and heading to Abbots Wood for a walk and picnic in the winter sunshine. Not a lot beats wrapping your hands around a steaming cup of coffee rustled up in the great outdoors!
